Peace Memorial Hall – Trusteeship Opportunity!

Codicote Peace Memorial Hall (PMH) was first opened in November 1927, to serve as a much-needed parish hall and as a memorial to celebrate the end of the war. Prior to 1927, the site housed a large barn, which, alongside accommodating a shoemaker’s workshop, was also used by the community for dances and public events. Whilst continuing to commemorate those who lost their lives in service of this country, the hall is used today as a venue for several clubs and community groups as well as a private hire venue.

https://www.codicote-pmh.co.uk/

Having initially been managed by the local church council, the diocese subsequently setup a trust to manage the hall. Today, the PMH is a registered charity (no. 302356) run by a Committee of Trustees, with all income from the use of the hall, including grants and donations, going back into its running and maintenance. The trustees are responsible for the day-to-day management of the hall, ensuring its ongoing maintenance and handling the PMH finances.

Having been trustees for the past 10 years, Martin and Mairi would now like to pass on the baton to some new trustees to take the PMH forward for the future. This is a great opportunity for someone motivated by supporting the community and with the drive to ensure the Peace Memorial Hall can thrive for years to come. This trusteeship would be an exciting prospect for someone who has the vision to develop the PMH, adapting it for the changing shape of the parish and the evolving needs of the parishioners.

Would you be interested?

If you would like to understand more about the trusteeship of the Peace Memorial Hall, please get in touch with either Martin Newman (PMH Trustee) or Pete Bexton (Parish Council representative for the PMH).

With thanks to the Codicote Local History Society.

Codicote Parish Council News Update

It’s not often that the parish council gets the opportunity to sing its own praises, but it is important to highlight to parishioners the good work that the parish council is undertaking on behalf of the parish.

The parish council have formally appointed Andrew Nolan to carry out litter picking in the whole village and Andrew has also been engaged to weed the High Street, but also other streets in Codicote as and when they need doing. The contract to maintain the planters in Codicote has also been renewed, the parish council delighted with the work that Making Life Beautiful have done with the planters.

The play areas in Codicote, at this time of year in particular, become increasingly difficult to keep in a useable state. The parish council are very pleased to confirm that Yvonne Morris, whom the parish council employ as their cleaner, has agreed to take on additional hours to keep all the play areas clean.

Other ongoing projects of significance include the following: –

  • Discussions with appropriate stakeholders for a replacement building for the scout hut.
  • Council is currently putting together a team of people, including a planning consultant, to produce a new Neighbourhood Plan.
  • The parish council has received planning permission for new car park lighting at the John Clements Sports and Social Club car park along with a height barrier at the entrance.

It is also with great pleasure that the council announce the addition of a new councillor, Neil Fothergill, to the fold. Neil will be a great asset and since induction has joined the planning committee.

I look forward to keeping you up to date in the future with all the good work that the parish council is doing on your behalf.

Ukraine – Codicote Responds

With the stark reminders to us on a daily basis of the current turmoil in Ukraine, I thought it a good time to let the residents of Codicote know how the village is responding to help those in need. It has been, quite simply, amazing.

When the invasion of Ukraine by Putin first began, Mark Knapper and his family were immediately worried sick for the safety of their good friends in Kiyv. He contacted them to offer refuge, if needed, and they responded within minutes to say yes – not only for them, but, if possible for two friends as well.

Mark mentioned this in The Goat that evening, and suddenly, Codicote erupted. People began to contact him offering rooms, clothes, toys, anything, just to help. That was only a month ago, and we have now been able to make plans for 18 people to come to Codicote from all over Ukraine: a mother and son, another mother with two children, a young pregnant lady, a family of 6, another family whose young daughter urgently needs medical attention – the list goes on.

And we have offers from across the village, of food, money, childcare, transport, haircuts, everything, in fact, that our guests could need. We’ve managed to arrange school places, doctors, jobs and even, we think, Ukrainian interpreters. The people of Codicote should be enormously proud of themselves.

But the job is far from over. So many people need our support, and the requests come in every day. So more is still needed – CAN YOU HELP?? It doesn’t have to be a big thing – small, everyday items and activities will be just as important and valuable.  If you can, please contact your parish councillor, and they will pass your details on. And, in advance, thank you.

Councillor Arthur South
